Dear Magnet Parents and Students,
It is my esteem pleasure to serve as the Magnet Counselor for the Academy of Research and Medical Sciences at South Cobb High School. Excitement is the word that comes to mind when I think of this opportunity. Student success is my primary focus, as I cannot wait to travel the path to success with you. Certainly, I look forward to meeting the parents and students of the Magnet program and to working closely with you as well. This is my fourth year as a professional school counselor at South Cobb. Prior to that, I spent five years as a counselor at Central Alternative School. My educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from Columbus State University, a Master of Education and a Specialist in Education in School Counseling from the University of West Georgia. Currently, I plan to pursue a Doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision. The Magnet Counseling program provides individual and group advisement, classroom guidance sessions, assistance with the college application process, and searches for local, state and national scholarship information. Both the Magnet Counselor and the Magnet Coordinator monitor all students' grades and meet with students to evaluate student success in the program. As we plan for a successful school term, let us be sure to keep the lines of communication open. Located in the Magnet building, my daily office hours are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Appointments are appreciated and available for after school hours. Please feel free to email me at Valerie.Greyer@cobbk12.org or to call me at (770) 819-2611, ext. 225. Again, it is my pleasure to work with you as I anticipate only the best this school year. Valerie Greyer Mrs. Valerie Greyer, Ed.S.Contact Information

Guidance Office Hours
The counseling office is from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. Students and parents can make appointments to meet with the counselor by e-mail, by telephone, or by coming by the Magnet office. A student can pick up a form to request an appointment from the homeroom teacher or in the Magnet office.
Student Appointments
The counselor will give the student a pass to the office for the scheduled time from 8:00am to 4:00pm. Mrs. Bush will be available by appointment until 6:00 on Tuesday afternoons. Tuesday afternoon appointments are designed for students who are unable to meet with me during regular school hours. Drop-ins will be assisted if the student obtains a written pass in advance from the teacher whose class is scheduled for that time. Students can also leave a note with a request or question for the counselor with Mrs. Newman. Responses will be sent to the homeroom advisor as soon possible. A student may also e-mail the counselor with a request or question.
Parent Appointments
The 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month are set aside to assist parents. Parent conference appointments are available from 9:00am to 4:00pm. To accommodate parent work schedules, the counselor will available from 9:00am until 6:00pm. Parent sessions are designed for parents to meet with the counselor to discuss their concerns or answer questions. Making an appointment guarantees private time with the counselor. These appointments will last approximately 30 minutes. To ensure that a concern receives the proper attention that it deserves, please make an appointment.
Missed Appointments
In cases where school events or emergencies make it impossible to meet with the parent or student at the scheduled time, the student and parent will be contacted, and the counselor will reschedule the appointment for the next most mutually convenient time for the parent and/or student. Parents are asked to contact the Magnet office if they are running late or cannot keep and appointment. A missed appointment can be rescheduled, bit it cannot run over into anther parent or student appointment.Advisement - Students will have formal advisements with the counselor during their freshman year, in the fall of their senior year, and in the spring of their junior year. Because magnet students have additional requirements to earn a Magnet seal, these advisement sessions focus on individual student plans and progress.
Transcripts
Requests for transcripts and/or references should be directed to the Magnet counselor. Transcript request forms are located in the Magnet office. Transcript requests should be submitted two days prior to the date needed.
Counselor Recommendations
To receive the best possible recommendation, students must submit a copy of their resume along with their request for a reference or recommendation. Requests should be submitted two weeks prior to the application deadline.
